AN EPIDEMIOLOGICAL SURVEY OF MAJOR MENTAL DISORDERS IN THE YUN CHUN AREA

Abstract
The author studied the prevalence of major mental disorders (Schizophrenia, Manic depressive illness, Epilepsy, General paresis, Mental retardation, and other psychoses) in Mi San Myun and Baik Hak Myun, Yun Chun Gun, Kyung Ki Do, Korea which were populated by 8,364 persons, by the Intensive Census Visit Method from Jan. 15th 1976 to Feb. 28th, 1976.
The results were as follows:
1. The general prevalences were 0.29% for schizophrenia, 0.02% for manic depressive illness, 0.43% for epilepsy, 0.09% for mental retardation, 0.05% for other psychosis, and 0.59% for all mental major disorders.
2. The age of onset of each disorders was largely coincident with the range of age of susceptibility suggested previously in other countries.
3. The corrected incidences obtained from Weinberg¢¥s abridged method were 0.70% (the range of age of susceptibility; 16-40) for schizophrenia, 0.07 % (the range of age of susceptibility; 16-50) for manic depressive illness, 0.23% (the range of age of susceptibility; 5-30) for epilepsy, 1.07% (the range of age of susceptibility; ¢¥ 61-100) for senile psychosis.
4. The majority of these patients were chronic i, e; the duration of illness were more than fiveyears in 63.27% of all cases.
5. Family mental illness history was revealed in. 28-57%.
6. The kinds of treatments received by most of them were either superstitious, shamanistic or htrb drug¢¥s ¢¥(69.3$96) and only 10.20% of the patients received treatment at general practitioner¢¥s clinic. Two of them had history of psychiatric specialist¢¥s therapy.
